Voters, including Republicans, increasingly oppose the current crop of trade agreements and also support raising taxes to pay for health care, according to recent polls.

Haiti has had too much rain – or rather too much rain given the prevailing conditions of catastrophic erosion and deforestation. Much of Haiti is under mud or under water.

Just over half way through the stipulated time period before certification of the referendum on CAFTA will take place, a meticulous counting of every vote is happening in front of TV cameras, accompanied by a detailed accounting process. For the uninitiated, this provides the illusion of squeaky transparency; how could there be voter fraud here?However, the fraud was committed long before the voting even started – and so far, there is no institution or mechanism willing to name that. read more

As of Monday mudslides had killed 23 people near Cabaret (19 miles north of Port au Prince) – by Tuesday morning some estimates were as high as 43 for the country as a whole.
