Statement on Unilateral Coersive Measures at the UN Security Council

On March 25th, Alfred de Zayas, expert on civil and political rights and former UN independent expert,¬† made a presentation at the UN Security Council about unilateral coercive measures (UCMs or ‘sanctions’).

UCMs generate humanitarian crises, legal and social chaos, leaving victims without effective access to justice and without remedies. UCMs are incompatible with the noble principles of the UN Charter and the Constitutions of many UN agencies including UNESCO and WHO.

Nicaragua is a target of UCMs which Zayas defines as an “unlawful use of force in contravention¬† of the letter and spirit of the UN Charter.”¬† His statement outlines specific actions that should be taken against them
