17 Members of Congress express concern for human rights defenders and PROAH

In a letter sent yesterday to President Lobo, 17 members of the United States Congress expressed concern regarding the escalation of violence targeting human rights defenders and international human rights accompaniment efforts in Honduras in recent months. The representatives requested an exhaustive investigation into recent death threats issued to human rights defenders, journalists and PROAH accompaniers by C.A.M.

COFADEH URGENT ACTION: Honduran State Against Victims of the DEA

The Committee of the Families of the Detained and Disappeared of Honduras, COFADEH, expresses its total repudiation and extreme concern for the abandonment on the part of the state of Honduras, of the victims of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Honduran security agents’ antidrug operation carried out on May 11, 2012 in the community of Paptalaya, Ahuas, Department of Gracias a Dios.

Amnesty International issues public letter to gov of Honduras: No more killings, attacks or threats

As part of its ongoing effort to protect human rights defenders and journalists in Honduras at this critical time, Amnesty International issued a public letter to the government of Honduras, demanding that there be: “No more killings, attacks or threats against journalists and human rights defenders.”

UNESCO Director-General calls for investigation into killing of 19th journalist

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova today called for an investigation into the killing of Erick Martínez Ávila, a journalist and gay rights activist.

“I condemn the murder of Erick Martínez Ávila,” declared the Director-General. “I am deeply concerned about this second journalist killed in Honduras in a month and call on the authorities to bring to justice the perpetrators of this crime against the basic human right of freedom of expression.
