The Costa Rican Minister of Foreign relations, Rene Castro, met with the diplomatic corps accredited in the country today to notify them of Costa Rica’s decision to file charges against Nicaragua with the International Court of Justice at the Hague for supposed violation of sovereignty and environmental damages. Costa Rica will also seek protective measures to avoid the dredging of the San Juan River.
The right to dredge the waterway was established as a sovereign right of Nicaragua in a sentence issued by the same court on July 13, 2009.
Minutes ago, in a press conference, Castro said that the Government of Costa Rica is pleased with the decision of the Permanent Council, which at the insistence of Costa Rica, has convened a Consultative Meeting with the Ministers of Foreign Relations of the Americas with the objective of addressing the course of events in the border area with Nicaragua.
