COFADEH – Press Release on continued threats against award winning journalist Dina Meza

From the Committee of Family Members of the Detained and Disappeared of Honduras (COFADEH) to the national and international community, to organizations that defend human rights and to organizations that defend freedom of expression, we communicate the following:

The journalist Dina Meza, well-recognized human rights defender and Coordinator of the COFADEH Press Unit, continues to be the victim of threatening phone calls and continues to be followed.  This heightens the risk of an attempt on her life and the lives of members of her family.

For this reason our committee has made these related incidents known to the Special Prosecutor on Human Rights, threats that began in February of 2012 and have continued to the present day.

The record of incidents shows a clear pattern of being followed and receiving threatening calls that contain violent and grotesque sexual content.  These add to the intimidation and anxiety of our friend and co-worker.

On the 19th of November strangers followed and approached Dina Meza’s youngest son.  This should call the attention of the authorities in the Secretary of Security in charge of applying protective measures provided by the Inter-American Human Rights Commission (IAHRC), the same that have been granted to all COFADEH personnel.

Considering that a report was filed with the Office of the District Attorney (Ministerio Público) on April 23, 2012 for death threats against journalist Dina Meza and that from that date there have been a series of threatening incidents that now involve one of her children, we insist on increasing pressure for an investigation of this case that would permit this journalist to undergo her advocacy and reporting under secure conditions that assure her physical and emotional integrity.

For this reason we demand that these structures that threaten the safety of Dina Meza and her family be dismantled.  At the same time we demand to be informed regarding progress in the investigation and corresponding legal action.

Lastly, we insist on immediately convoking a meeting with the Human Rights Unit of the Secretary of Security with a goal of changing the implementation of the security measures ordered by IAHRC and its protective measures MC-400.09.

COMUNICADO

El Comité de Familiares de Detenidos Desaparecidos en Honduras (COFADEH) a la
comunidad nacional e internacional, a los organizaciones defensoras de derechos
humanos y a los organismos que defienden la libertad de expresión comunica lo siguiente:

La periodista Dina Meza, reconocida defensora de derechos humanos y Coordinadora de
la Unidad de Prensa del COFADEH continúa siendo víctima de seguimientos y llamadas
telefónicas amenazantes que elevan el riesgo de un atentado contra su vida y los
miembros de su familia.

En ese sentido nuestro comité ha puesto en conocimiento de la Fiscalía Especial de
Derechos Humanos de todos los incidentes relacionados a las amenazas que van desde
febrero de 2012 a la fecha.

El registro de incidencias muestra un claro patrón de seguimiento, amenazas telefónicas
de contenido sexual violento y grotesco que añade intimidación y angustia a nuestra
compañera.

El seguimiento y abordaje de desconocidos hacia el hijo menor de Dina Meza ocurrido el
pasado 19 de noviembre, debe llamar la atención de las autoridades de la Secretaría de
Seguridad encargadas de aplicar las medidas cautelares de protección otorgadas por la
Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH) de la cual goza todo el personal
del COFADEH.

Al considerar que desde el 23 de abril de 2012 se interpuso una denuncia ante el Ministerio
Público por amenazas a muerte contra la periodista Dina Meza y que desde esa fecha han ocurrido
una serie de incidentes amenazantes que involucran ahora a uno de sus hijos, solicitamos que se
apresuren diligencias investigativas sobre este caso, que permitan a la comunicadora social ejercer
sus labores de defensoría y periodísticas bajo condiciones de seguridad que aseguren su integridad
física y emocional.

En ese sentido demandamos que se desmantelen las estructuras que están generando la
inseguridad para Dina Meza y los miembros de su familia. Por otro lado exigimos que se nos
informe sobre los avances de las investigaciones y las diligencias judiciales correspondientes.

Por último solicitamos que se verifique una reunión inmediata con la Unidad de Derechos
Humanos de la Secretaría de Seguridad afin de revisar la implementación de las medidas de
seguridad ordenadas por la CIDH en su medida cautelar MC-400-09.
