Juan Orlando Hernandez returns to Honduras thanks toTrump intervention

Former President of Honduras and convicted drug trafficker, Juan Orlando Hernandez, returned to Honduras on July 26th, 2026 after being pardoned by Trump. The implications are devastating for the people of Honduras. While claiming to be fighting a war on drugs, Trump has just put the “boss of all drug bosses” back on the street, according to ERIC, the Jesuit sponsored Reflection, Research and Communication Team.  Historian Dana Frank writes that the move “underscores Trump’s ability to use his pardon power to undermine the rule of law both at home and abroad — intervening in a sovereign nation to push it further to the right and land yet another blow in the long arc of destructive U.S. intervention in Honduras.”
